Description
Using Victorian women to represent Nietzsche’s “master” and “slave” types, the work reflects on how these roles still shape South African identity today. It asks whether we can move beyond inherited power structures toward the ideal of the Übermensch—one who creates their own values.
These figures serve as mirrors, inviting viewers to consider their own position in this moral landscape.
By layering symbolic imagery, historical text, and collage, I create a visual conversation between 19th-century Europe and 21st-century South Africa.
The work asks: how do old systems of power and morality still shape us, can we step away from this cyclical nature of life, the “Eternal Occurrence” and evolve past them?
Method: The base layer is teabag paper, symbolizing calm and reflection. I enlarge vintage photographs of Victorian women, then build their forms with up to nine layers of transferred text from old recipe books and yearbooks, creating visual depth and historical resonance. The final layers include embroidery, ink, pastel, and textured acrylic gel—each adding tactile and symbolic richness.
