Description

Lilac Breasted Rollers, birds renowned for their breathtaking beauty. For this painting, I took a different approach by using oil paint on 200 gsm paper. I chose this method to explore the possibility of capturing finer details, and I’m pleased to say it was definitely achievable thanks to the smooth surface of the paper. The level of detail in this artwork is truly remarkable. The piece measures 297mm x 420mm and would look fantastic framed—perhaps a classic black frame would enhance its elegance. I hope you all enjoy this creation!

Kindly note this piece is not framed but can be framed at extra cost before being delivered.

The Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is a striking bird renowned for its vibrant and colorful plumage. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, this bird is often considered one of the most beautiful rollers due to its dazzling array of colors.

The Lilac-breasted Roller features a bright turquoise head and nape, with a rich lilac-colored breast and belly. Its wings are a vibrant mix of blue and green, and it has a distinctive long tail with elongated central tail feathers that add to its elegant appearance. Its beak is sturdy and black, well-suited for catching insects.

This bird prefers open woodland, savannah, and acacia-dominated areas. It is often seen perched prominently on trees, wires, or other vantage points, from which it surveys the ground for prey.

Its diet mainly consists of insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, and locusts. It hunts by swooping down from its perch to catch prey on the ground.

Lilac-breasted Rollers are known for their acrobatic flight displays, especially during the breeding season, where they perform spectacular aerial displays. They are generally solitary or found in pairs, and they are quite territorial.

They nest in tree cavities or old nests of other birds, laying a clutch of 2-4 eggs. Both parents share incubation duties and feeding responsibilities.

In many African cultures, the Lilac-breasted Roller is considered a symbol of beauty and grace. Its vibrant colors make it a favorite among birdwatchers.
