Found across much of eastern and southern Africa, it is the fourth largest species of tortoise in the world, with adults capable of reaching over 70 centimeters in length and weighing more than 40 kilograms. Despite its size, the leopard tortoise is gentle and entirely herbivorous, feeding primarily on grasses, succulents, and fruits. Unlike many other tortoises, it does not dig burrows but instead uses abandoned aardvark or jackal dens for shelter during extreme heat or cold.

For me as the photographer, this image was about connection. By kneeling close and focusing directly on the tortoise’s face, I wanted to bring the viewer into its world, collapsing the distance that often exists between people and reptiles. Instead of being seen from afar as part of a shell, here the tortoise is encountered eye-to-eye, as an individual deserving of admiration and respect.

“Leopard Gaze” is both a portrait and a meditation. It reminds us that beauty exists in the smallest details, in the overlooked faces of creatures who move at their own pace through life. It celebrates endurance, patience, and the quiet strength of one of Africa’s most remarkable reptiles. In the tortoise’s unhurried stare, there is no rush, no fear, only the calm presence of an ancient traveler who has walked the Earth far longer than us.
