Presence, a solitary bull emerges from the dust and shadow, its muscular form defined by bold contrasts of white and charcoal, commanding the canvas with quiet authority; 100 cm × 65 cm, acrylic on canvas.

Artist: Barend Vermaak

Description

There is a singular power in Barend Vermaak’s portrayal of this bull; a creature that seems to materialise from the very earth beneath it, rendered with a directness that speaks to both vulnerability and strength. The composition holds the animal in a moment of stillness, yet the work pulses with an almost palpable energy.

Barend’s use of light and shadow creates a striking visual drama. The bull’s body is carved from contrasts; areas of pale cream and white emerge against deep charcoal and teal tones, creating a sculptural quality that makes the animal feel almost three-dimensional. The horns sweep outward with an elegant curve, anchoring the composition and drawing the viewer’s gaze upward. The palette shifts from the cool, muted tones of the upper canvas to warmer ochres and sandy hues at the base, suggesting a landscape caught between dusk and dawn, between seasons, between states of being.

Vermaak’s brushwork is deliberate and expressive. The texture across the bull’s body varies; some areas are rendered with smooth, confident strokes whilst others are more gestural, almost fragmented, as though the animal is emerging from or dissolving into the atmosphere around it. This technique creates an intriguing tension; the bull is simultaneously solid and ephemeral, present and elusive. The negative space surrounding the creature amplifies its isolation yet paradoxically strengthens its presence on the canvas. Every mark feels intentional, every colour choice purposeful.

What emerges is a meditation on solitude and dignity, on the quiet nobility of creatures who inhabit wild and unforgiving landscapes. There is something deeply rooted in the South African experience here, the veld, the untamed animal, the relationship between land and beast. Yet the work transcends its geographical specificity to speak to something more profound; the way singular beings command space through their mere existence, the way presence itself becomes a form of power.

The bull gazes outward, neither aggressive nor submissive, simply existing in its own moment. What does this creature represent to you? Is it a symbol of resilience, of wildness, of the untamed forces that persist beyond human control? Vermaak leaves the answer suspended in the dust and shadow, inviting each viewer to discover their own truth.
