Scorched Earth

R8500,00

Scorched Earth confronts you with elemental intensity, where dark, branching forms cut through a field of molten gold like memory etched into land; Gold Leaf and Oil on Board, 60 cm x 40 cm x 4 cm; framed in a Teak frame, 70 cm x 53 cm x 4 cm.

Artist: Laetitia Viljoen

Description

Scorched Earth begins in the tension between beauty and severity; a landscape distilled into its most essential energies. Laetitia presents a stand of bare trees as silhouettes, their branches reaching upward like blackened veins against a glowing, gold leaf sky. The effect is immediate and visceral, as though the land has been heated to its core and is still holding that warmth, even after the flames have gone. It is a work that does not romanticise nature, it honours its force.

The composition is spare yet richly charged. The lower section is weighted with a dark, textured ground, a band of earth that feels compacted, scorched, and heavy. From this base, the trees rise in slender, irregular lines, each one distinct in its gesture, yet bound together as a collective. These vertical forms create a rhythmic lattice across the board, directing the eye upward and outward, as though searching for air, relief, or renewal. The spacing between trunks becomes as meaningful as the trunks themselves, offering moments of openness that heighten the sense of exposure.

Gold leaf dominates the background, but Laetitia uses it as atmosphere rather than ornament. It catches light softly, never gaudy, allowing the surface to shift with the viewer’s movement. The gilded field reads as sun, smoke, heat, and aftermath all at once, a single shimmering skin holding multiple meanings. Oil paint is worked into and over this gold ground, creating depth through layering and subtle abrasion. In places, the surface appears rubbed back, revealing quieter tonal variations beneath, suggesting the land’s capacity to absorb and remember.

The emotional resonance lies in the work’s honesty. There is unease here, yes, but also clarity. Scorched Earth speaks to the enduring journeys of change, loss, and recovery, those seasons in life when something must burn away before anything new can take root. The trees are stripped yet standing. They do not perform triumph, they embody persistence. In that sense, the work carries a deep, South African familiarity, the understanding of drought, heat, and harsh light, and the knowledge that resilience is not always graceful, it is simply necessary.

The teak frame adds to this grounded presence, reinforcing the work’s relationship to material and earth. It holds the piece like an artefact, something kept because it matters, not because it is comfortable. Scorched Earth leaves you with a quiet question that lingers, when you have been through your own fire, what do you discover still standing within you?
