Sink or swim confronts the viewer with a startling surrender, a figure arched above water, caught between falling and floating, between effort and release. Chenée paints the body not as a symbol of defeat, but as a truthful portrait of overwhelm, that peculiar modern exhaustion where even deciding what to do next can feel like wading through tide. Yet within this precarious posture, there is also a quiet intelligence, a recognition that sometimes the most compassionate response to life’s pressure is to stop fighting the current.

Colour sets the emotional tempo immediately. The water is rendered in layered blues and grey greens, cool and heavy, while the sky and surrounding atmosphere dissolve into pale, cloudy tones that press down like a soft weight. These hues do not simply describe an environment, they create a psychological field, a world where clarity is muffled, where the horizon feels distant. Against this, the warmth of skin, the rose and ochre notes in legs, shoulder, and face, becomes a fragile flame. It is the human presence insisting on itself, not loudly, but undeniably.

Chenée’s technique heightens this tension through a measured interplay of detail and softness. The face, turned upward, is handled with careful sensitivity, while edges elsewhere blur and breathe, as though the figure is slipping into the element beneath her. The white garment, loosely painted yet convincingly weighted, behaves like a second skin, a veil of vulnerability. Its folds catch light in thin, milky layers, and those highlights create leading lines that guide the eye along the arc of the body, from toes that barely skim the surface to the head tipped back into air. The composition reads like a held breath.

What is remarkable is how Chenée uses stillness to suggest motion. The water is not violently disturbed; it is thick, almost quiet, with small tonal shifts that imply depth rather than drama. This restraint makes the moment more intimate. It feels less like an accident and more like a decision, an embodied pause. The figure’s arched spine and elongated neck carry a dancer’s sensibility, a kind of disciplined openness, as if the body has learned to trust balance even when the mind is uncertain. In that sense, the work becomes less about danger and more about threshold.

The title, Sink or swim, offers a binary we all recognise, the harsh voice of pressure that demands performance, resilience, solutions. Chenée complicates that demand. She introduces a third possibility, floating, not as laziness, but as strategy. Floating is what the body does when it remembers buoyancy. Floating is what happens when you stop punishing yourself for not coping perfectly. In the awkwardness of the pose, we find something profoundly familiar, those moments when life feels too loud, too fast, too much, and the bravest thing is to stay present without forcing forward motion.

There is tenderness in how Chenée paints the figure’s fragility without exploiting it. The body is neither eroticised nor dramatised; it is simply human, honest, exposed. The wooden box frame, with its contained depth, reinforces the feeling of a private moment witnessed, a scene held like a reliquary of emotion.
