Description
The bullet of Africa has some very interesting facts about them:
Fastest Land Animal: Cheetahs can reach speeds of up to 60-70 miles per hour (97-113 km/h) in short bursts covering distances up to 1,500 feet (460 meters).
Specialized Body: They have a lightweight frame, long legs, a flexible spine, and large nasal passages that allow for rapid breathing during high-speed chases.
Distinctive Spots: Cheetahs have around 2,000 black spots on their tan coats, which help them camouflage in tall grass.
Unique Tear Marks: They have black “tear marks” running from the inner corners of their eyes down to the sides of their mouths, which help reflect the sun’s glare and enhance their focus on prey.
Diet: Cheetahs primarily hunt small to medium-sized ungulates like gazelles and impalas.
Hunting Technique: They rely on incredible speed and agility rather than strength, often chasing prey in short, explosive sprints.
Social Structure: Males often form small groups called coalitions, usually made up of brothers, while females tend to be solitary or mother with cubs.
Reproduction: Female cheetahs give birth to 3-5 cubs after a gestation of about 90-95 days. Cubs are born with a thick coat of “mantle” fur for camouflage.
Conservation Status: Cheetahs are classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade.
Lifespan: In the wild, cheetahs typically live around 10-12 years, while in captivity they can live up to 17 years.
Poem: The Bullet of Africa
Written by: Shay-Leigh Venter
I have an extremely flexible spine, slow is everything but mine.
A field is where I roam, the savannah is my home.
But sadly I don’t have that much stamina, at least I am a bullet of Africa.
Unlike most cats our nails don’t come in and out, when we flex our paws about.
I am a racer, I’ve got a lot of speed, a legit conservation project is what we need.
Watch us run see our pace, don’t be alarmed if you meet us face to face. Please don’t shoot us in the head when we look for our sauce and bread, when we lurk on your farm and put your livestock on alarm.
It’s the people’s fault, that throw the malt, that brings the mice, that brings the birds, that let the predators arrive. If we had a choice we would choose more then just survive, in 20 years we might go extinct
