Description
Absalom is a dark, allegorical painting steeped in biblical tragedy and human suffering. Drawing from the story of King David’s son who was caught in a tree, Rademeyer creates a nightmarish scene of divine judgment and consequence. Grotesque, emaciated figures are entwined with the gnarled branches of a tree that seems to be absorbing them.
The earthy, tenebrous palette evokes a sense of ancient, inescapable doom. In one version of this haunting narrative, a horned figure sits below, a silent observer or perhaps an instigator of the damnation above. This work is a chilling meditation on pride, betrayal, and the tangled nature of justice, both mortal and divine.
