After the Storm unfolds as a meditation on the pause that follows intensity. A familiar street lies washed and shining, its surface holding small mirrors to the sky. Above, clouds thin into evening light, their oranges and ambers lifted by a breath of pale blue at the horizon. Liezel van Deventer’s touch is assured, her textured sky set against calmer passages below, so that reflection becomes both literal and contemplative.
Colour carries the emotion with clarity. Warm earth tones in the road, sienna and umber with threads of rose, echo the heavens while remaining resolutely grounded. The coolness at the horizon offers reprieve, a gentle intake of breath after the thunder’s exhale. Subtle details, a solitary light post, a distant vehicle, give scale without insisting on narrative. They are notes of life, not the story itself.
What anchors the painting is its sense of gratitude. The world appears rinsed, edges softened, sound hushed. In that hush, the ordinary turns luminous. The composition leads the eye along the wet lane, into the reflected glow, and out toward the restored calm of the sky.
