Thunder! confronts the eye with nature’s grand theatre. Liezel van Deventer does not merely paint a storm, she translates atmosphere into presence, vast, urgent, irresistible. Years on the Highveld taught her the choreography of thunderheads, their rising pillars and sudden veils of rain, and that knowledge animates every stroke.
The sky is dense with promise, deep indigo and bruised violet pressing against luminous creams and golds. The cloud swells from the horizon like breath held in the chest of the land. Impasto passages catch light across their ridges, giving the cloud a palpable weight, while softer blends carry the roll and slide of moisture within the mass. A muted band of orange near the ground hints at rain striking earth, the moment when tension turns to release.
The drama is balanced by restraint. The lower register of the painting is quiet, a grounded plane that listens rather than competes.
