Equipose

Description

Equipoise is a profound study in balance, both physically and metaphorically. Joyce Carreira presents a seemingly impossible scene: a long beam, holding two distinct figures, balanced perfectly on a single, fine point. One figure sits in calm contemplation, a grounding force of stability and thought. In stark contrast, the other leans back in a pose of exhilarating risk and abandon, a celebration of dynamic energy.

The sculpture is the physical embodiment of its title, a state where opposing forces or interests find their perfect counterpoint. It speaks to the essential dichotomies of life: logic and passion, safety and adventure, silence and expression. As suggested by the artist’s thematic notes, this is the “Balance of Forces of Interest,” achieved through “The Perfect Weight.” The tension in the piece is exquisite; it feels as though a single breath could disrupt the harmony, yet the balance holds, strong and true. Equipoise is a sophisticated and elegant work that invites us to reflect on the delicate balances we strike in our own lives.
