Description
The Heavies is a dynamic and incisive commentary on the nature of conflict. Joyce Carreira stages a “perpetual debate” between two impassioned advocates. Their bodies are alive with movement, leaning forward, arms gesticulating, their urgency and conviction palpable. They are not engaged in dialogue but in a performance of power, persuasion, and posturing. The large, dark, U-shaped structure they stand upon functions as a conceptual scale of justice, strained and imbalanced by what the artist calls “ego, ideology, and the age old human compulsion to win the argument.”
The work brilliantly visualizes the absurdity of a world where everyone is speaking and no one is listening. It asks the viewer to consider the cost of such conflict, where the scale never settles and debate becomes more about winning than about finding truth. It’s a timeless yet incredibly urgent piece that resonates with the noise of courtrooms, parliaments, and our daily lives.
