“Hellthcare” is a word-play on the idea of Hell, and how it can creep into healthcare. It is supposed to draw the viewer into the health worker’s point of view. The color use and slight distortion of the proportions of the room is intentional – to indicate severe fatigue (as is routinely the reality of many health-care workers), as well as vicarious trauma. South African healthcare workers face horrific trauma regularly and has little to no support available to process this. In the image – you can see evidence of a procedure that has been done in haste, with the subsequent spillage of what appears to be blood and dirt in a setting that should be pristine. I hope to bring attention to the plight of all the healthcare workers that chooses to stay in South Africa, despite the challenges and the much greener pastures available abroad.
