Once upon a shrew highlights a small but remarkable short-eared elephant shrew, one of the intriguing members of the Little 5. Despite their tiny size, these creatures possess lively and vibrant personalities. They are incredibly swift, capable of reaching speeds up to 30 km/h, and they diligently keep their miniature pathways free of sticks and debris, ensuring a smooth and effortless run within their small territories.

The artwork is created in oil on cotton canvas, measuring 42cm by 30cm. It is currently unframed but can be framed upon request at an additional cost before shipping. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a conservation organization making a meaningful difference. All my pieces are signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Description

Once upon a shrew is about the short-eared elephant shrew (*Elephantulus fuscipes*) is a small, insectivorous mammal belonging to the family Macroscelididae. Despite its name, it is not a true shrew or an elephant but is named for its elongated nose and trunk-like appearance.

– Size: Typically around 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) in body length, with a tail of similar length.

– Fur: Generally grayish-brown with some lighter and darker markings, aiding in camouflage.

– Ears: Notably short compared to other elephant shrews, which is a distinguishing feature.

– Nose: Long and flexible, used for foraging and scent detection.

– Distribution: Found in parts of southern Africa, including regions of Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa.

– Habitat: Prefers dry, arid environments such as savannas, shrublands, and semi-desert areas.

– Behavior: Mostly diurnal, active during the day, and highly agile.

– Diet: Primarily feeds on insects such as ants, termites, and beetles, using its keen sense of smell to locate prey.

– Movement: Known for rapid, bounding movements and quick burrowing to escape predators.

– Breeding: Usually has several litters per year, with each litter consisting of 1-3 offspring.

– Development: Young are precocial, born with their eyes open and able to move shortly after birth.

The short-eared elephant shrew plays an important role in its ecosystem as a predator of insects and as prey for larger predators. Despite its somewhat elusive nature, it is an intriguing species with specialized adaptations suited to its environment. These fast and tiny little creatures are also part of the little 5 in South Africa.
