Description

My Sacred Place is a visual sanctuary; a layered narrative that honours the sacred, the seen, and the remembered. Naledi Shange invites the viewer into a world where spiritual lineage and contemporary life flow together like water, fluid, reflective, and alive. On the left, a serene woman with blue-toned skin gazes forward; her long, flowing hair adorned with natural elements suggests a connection to earth, ocean, and spirit. She is not merely a figure; she is a presence, ancestral, maternal, and divine. In front of her stands the Hindu deity Ganesha, rendered with grace and detail, a symbol of wisdom, protection, and new beginnings.

To the right, a modern white ship with red sails cuts through blue waters; its bold geometry and clean lines contrast with the organic softness of the spiritual figures. Birds in flight and smaller boats surround it, creating a sense of movement and community. The foreground is alive with people gathered near the water, some in conversation, others in quiet ritual, grounding the scene in shared experience and cultural continuity. Huts in the background and birds overhead complete the landscape, offering a sense of place that is both intimate and expansive.

The colour palette is rich and intentional. Blue dominates, not as a backdrop, but as a mood, evoking depth, calm, and spiritual clarity. Red, used sparingly in the sails and ornaments, introduces energy and direction; it draws the eye and suggests vitality. Earth tones in the huts and figures add warmth and grounding, while the white of the ship and deity offer purity and contrast. This interplay of hues creates a visual rhythm that mirrors the emotional cadence of the piece, reverence, movement, and belonging.

Shange’s composition is masterful. She balances sacred iconography with everyday life, allowing the viewer to move seamlessly between the divine and the human. The use of scale, with the large spiritual figures on the left and the bustling maritime scene on the right, creates a dynamic tension that invites exploration. Her technique, blending print precision with painterly softness, allows for both clarity and emotional depth; each element feels intentional, each figure part of a larger story.

There is a quiet symbolism in the way the ship moves forward while the spiritual figures remain still; it suggests the passage of time, the continuity of tradition, and the anchoring power of belief. The bird’s overhead, caught mid-flight, echo this theme of transition, between worlds, between generations, between the tangible and the unseen.

My Sacred Place speaks to the universal longing for connection, to ancestors, to land, to spirit, and to one another. It is a reminder that sacredness is not confined to temples or rituals; it lives in the everyday, in the waters we cross, the stories we carry, and the spaces we choose to honour. This artwork asks the viewer not just to observe, but to enter, to find their own sacred place within the layers of memory and meaning.

Where do you feel most connected and what stories live in the waters of your own becoming?
