Description

Tides of Becoming is a visual symphony of contradiction and harmony, a dreamscape where past and future meet in a tide of colour, form, and metaphor. Naledi Shange constructs a world that is both familiar and fantastical, a place where robotic figures, classical busts, and mythic waves coexist in a single, fluid composition. On the left, a stylised robotic figure with a human-like face stands adorned in mechanical components and vibrant attire; it is a symbol of evolution, of the merging between organic memory and digital possibility. Beside it, a classical bust of a child offers contrast, still, timeless, and tender.

At the centre, a wave reminiscent of Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa rises with force and grace; it is not merely water, but emotion, history, and transformation. From its crest leaps a vibrant orange koi fish, a symbol of perseverance, courage, and spiritual ascent. Behind the wave, a woman with red hair and a black outfit reaches toward the fish or the wave itself; her gesture is ambiguous, yet deeply human, a reaching, a yearning, a moment of becoming.

The background is a tapestry of architectural and symbolic elements. A traditional East Asian pagoda anchors the scene in cultural memory; a grid-like pattern suggests a digital or virtual realm. Red signs marked “CANDY” and “EXIT” punctuate the composition with playful yet possibly ominous meaning, temptation, escape, or transition. These elements do not compete; they converse, creating a layered narrative that invites interpretation.

The colour palette is bold and deliberate. Orange, used in the koi fish and accents, introduces vitality and transformation; it is the colour of fire, of change, of becoming. Blue, dominant in the wave and background, offers depth and emotional resonance; it speaks of longing, fluidity, and the subconscious. Red, used in signs and hair, adds urgency and contrast; it draws the eye and suggests both danger and desire. The interplay of these hues creates a psychological landscape that is as compelling as it is surreal.

Shange’s technique is eclectic and refined. She blends classical rendering with digital aesthetics, allowing for both precision and emotional ambiguity. The composition follows no strict rules, yet it guides the viewer’s eye with rhythm and intention; each element is placed to provoke thought, to stir feeling, to awaken curiosity.

There is a quiet tension between the robotic figure and the child’s bust, a dialogue between progress and innocence, between constructed identity and inherited memory. The wave, central and commanding, becomes a metaphor for change itself; unpredictable, powerful, and necessary. The koi fish, leaping with grace, reminds us that transformation is not only possible, but beautiful.

Tides of Becoming is a meditation on evolution, on the ways we adapt, reach, and redefine ourselves in a world that is constantly shifting. It speaks to the universal experience of change, of holding onto fragments of the past while stepping into the unknown. This artwork does not offer answers; it offers a journey, one that is fluid, complex, and deeply personal.

What are the tides that shape you and what are you becoming in their wake?
