Twin Currents

Description

Twin Currents presents two distinct moments that speak to one another across the space between them, creating a narrative of contrast and connection. In the first panel, a single koi dominates the composition with striking presence; its orange and black markings rendered with sculptural precision, its eye alert and knowing.

The background dissolves into muted greys and browns, creating an atmosphere of introspection and solitude. The brushwork is deliberate and controlled, each mark placed with intention, building form through careful layering of colour. In the second panel, multiple koi emerge from darkness, their forms less defined, more suggestive, creating a sense of mystery and multiplicity. Here the palette shifts; deeper blues and blacks dominate, with touches of orange creating focal points that guide the viewer’s eye. The brushwork becomes looser, more intuitive, allowing the viewer to complete the image through their own imagination.

Together, these two works create a meditation on individuality and community, on the solitary self and the collective whole. The koi become metaphors for the human experience; sometimes we stand alone in our own truth, sometimes we swim among others, sometimes we exist in both states simultaneously. Ingrid’s technique varies deliberately between the panels, suggesting different emotional registers, different ways of being in the world.

The diptych format itself becomes meaningful; the space between the two canvases becomes as important as the paintings themselves, a space where meaning is created through relationship and dialogue.
