Irda Rademeyer (b. 1989) is a South African artist whose work explores the space where art and technology meet. Born on 31 January, she was fondly nicknamed “Pay Day” by her father, Joof, a name that hints at the creative wealth she would go on to share with the world.
As the first in her family to formally pursue a career in the arts, Irda earned a master’s degree in fine art from the Tshwane University of Technology in 2015. Today, she shares her passion for creativity and learning as a teacher of Design and Technology as well as Afrikaans at the British Academy, a private Cambridge school. Even with a full teaching schedule, she continues to pour her heart into her art, using every spare moment to create.
Irda’s work is both thought provoking and deeply personal. She draws inspiration from the forms and imperfect functions of both mechanical and organic structures. Her pieces often feature animals and human figures, symbolically portrayed and entangled in distortion, disintegration and manipulation. Through this visual language, she explores themes of vulnerability, transformation and the ways we adapt in a world where the natural and the man-made are always interacting.
With a practice rooted in curiosity and care, Irda invites viewers to reflect on the ever-shifting balance between biology and machinery, and what it means to be human in a constantly evolving world.
