Artist Biography: Kevin Jones

Kevin Jones is a self-taught South African artist whose journey into the world of fine art is not only inspiring but deeply moving. From a young age, Kevin found comfort and joy in drawing during quiet moments. What began as a casual pastime slowly grew into a passionate pursuit of expression, one that would become both a lifeline and a powerful testimony of hope.
Now 45 years old, Kevin lives with Motor Neurone Disease, a debilitating neurological condition diagnosed nearly a decade ago. The illness began subtly, as an unexplained limp and occasional falling, eluding diagnosis for years despite numerous visits to specialists. Over time, the disease progressed, and today Kevin uses an electric wheelchair and has partial use of only one hand and arm. Yet despite these physical limitations, he continues to live with incredible courage, generosity, and purpose.
Where others might have been overwhelmed by such a diagnosis, Kevin chose a different path, one marked by creativity, determination, and compassion. With the help of his devoted elderly mother and a carer who visits twice daily, he has adapted to his new way of life with dignity and grace. His electric wheelchair allows him a measure of independence and mobility, including time in his home studio, where his creativity flows unfettered.
Kevin paints using his mouth, holding the brush with remarkable control and precision. With his one good hand, he opens paint bottles and arranges his tools, while colours are pre mixed by his support team to make the process more manageable. It is through this extraordinary method that Kevin produces artworks filled with life, emotion, and technical skill, each one a testament to resilience and vision.
In just a short time, Kevin’s work has captured the attention and admiration of art lovers across the country. His very first exhibition at the Wilderness Art Festival was a resounding success, with several of his early works sold to enthusiastic collectors. His growing portfolio now rarely includes unsold pieces, as demand for his art continues to rise. Kevin’s ability to translate photographic references into vivid, emotive paintings has made him a sought after commission artist, and he often recreates scenes from clients’ travels, transforming cherished memories into stunning, one of a kind artworks.
He receives guidance and constructive feedback from two local artists who visit him weekly, helping to refine his technique and broaden his stylistic range. But what sets Kevin apart is not just his remarkable adaptation or the quality of his work, it’s the spirit behind it. His art reflects a deep inner strength, an unwavering belief that there is always a way forward.
