About the Artist: Paena Galane
Paena Galane, the self-dubbed ‘artistic social integration kingpin’, is a Tshwane based storyteller who wields his brush and paint to capture the vibrant, complex, and often contentious narratives of our time. Born in Kalkspruit Village, Polokwane, this self taught multimedia artist has carved a unique space for himself with his signature dry paint texture and his unwavering commitment to creating art that demands dialogue. His work is not meant for passive viewing; it is a catalyst for conversation, a call for a more inclusive society, and a visual commentary on the world as he sees it.
Galane’s artistic journey was powerfully reignited during the global turbulence of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was in the quiet of lockdown that his creative spirit was unleashed, finding new energy and inspiration in the thriving artistic economies of social media. This path, however, is deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for storytelling. A published author of The babies of the revolution and a former government spokesperson, Galane has always been immersed in the world of words and public discourse. This rich background informs his art, allowing him to translate the complexities of social and political life into compelling visual illustrations.
At the core of his craft is a desire to “blast it loud”, to use his canvas to amplify debates around sports greatness, arts and culture, and the intricate political and social scenery of South Africa. His paintings are unflinching chronicles of our times, capturing the characters, the headlines, and the collective moods that shape our national identity. With a keen societal eye, Galane documents history as it unfolds, inviting viewers to find their own place within the narrative.
In a remarkably short time, his powerful voice has garnered significant recognition. Galane was a finalist for the prestigious Sasol Signatures Award in 2023 and the Gallery Art Bar Emerging Artist prize, and was selected for the RMB Talent Unlocked programme in 2024 and the RMB Latitudes in 2025. Following a residency at the renowned BagFactory Studios in Johannesburg, he has exhibited widely across Tshwane, Johannesburg, and online. Most recently, he exhibited at Terra Contemporary Gallery and has been selected for a group exhibition at the same gallery for August and September 2025.
