Biography: Zahn
Cape Town’s light has a way of holding on to things, brightening edges and deepening colour. It is in this glow that Zahn has found her voice. Trained in Graphic Design, she brings a calm sense of structure to a painting practice that feels alive, responsive, and generous. Her work speaks in a language of colour and form that is contemporary yet rooted in what moves us as people.
Zahn paints in a space she calls abstract realism, where familiar subjects loosen into gesture, and gesture returns as memory and mood. She paints what catches her eye and what settles in her chest, trusting both impulse and observation. You can sense the designer’s discipline in her balance and use of negative space, yet nothing feels stiff. The surfaces breathe, edges soften, and compositions hover between what we see and what we feel.
Acrylic is her medium of choice because it keeps pace with her. It can be pushed with water or lifted with a brush. She enjoys its quick intelligence, its ability to hold both quiet and intensity. At times she folds in mixed media to build texture, letting light gather in unexpected places while shadows find weight. She layers with care, creating depth that is less about illusion and more about emotion. The underlayers thrum like a heartbeat while the surface carries the song.
